I was a bit hesitant to release this track, knowing that some people will get their backs up. I write a lot of songs that are critical of Western colonialism, imperialism and hypocrisy but I mostly keep these to myself. I write 'Incorrigible Germany' in the wake of Germany's total and unconditional support for Israel in its bombardment of Gaza, and even an intervention on Israel's behalf at the ICJ.
Well, I lived in Germany for several years in my twenties and I found it beautiful, charming, progressive, livable, cultured...I have a fondness for the country and its people. But it's simply a fact that Germany committed more than one genocide in the twentieth century. And like much of the 'West' Germany may eventually be found complicit in genocide against Palestine.
Is the collective west, the 'friend-shoring nations,' the 'Garden' as EU diplomat Josep Borrel infamously called it, moving away from its dark history or clinging to it? As a citizen of this part of the geopolitical world, I'm curious to explore this, and I think we all should be.
lyrics
You started out last century
killing and starving the lesser people
in your South West Africa
and half way through that century
you killed and starved your way into your
Lebensraum
'til you were forced to let go of that dream
somewhere in the frozen fields
somewhere in the fires and in the smoke
and in the Wirtschaftswunder
even in the Mauerfall
in all the ways you've changed
and all the ways you've stayed the same
another lesser people will be found to bear
the burden of your shame
