When Larry Jon Played
01:55
|
|||
When I was young I wanted
to be a start in Nashville
but if I'd gone with my twinkle little star
they'd have laughed me out of town
so I stuck around
took the job at Broughman's
where I poured a few drinks
wiped a few tears
offered up my listening ears
when Larry Jon Wilson took the stage
When Larry Jon took the stage
boy he sure could play
boy he sure could sing
and did I say he sure could play?
It was his only stop in all of Kentucky
on his way back down to old Tennessee
but if I'd gone with my twinkle little star
they'd have all laughed at me

Lights Go Out
01:28
|
|||
A few miles north
of the shelling and counting
two deserters make their way as darkness falls
the forest thickens and the moon in shining brightly
their guiding light that sits in the widest clearest skies
where a lazy god could pull the cord
lights go out
sleep won't come
wait 'til dawn
and run along
over the winter fields
Just another children's song
to brighten up the season
so much snow
a Christmas glow
'til lights go out
and off to bed
sleep won't come you wait 'til dawn
for presents underneath the tree
the forest thickens
and the sun in shining weakly
lazy god could sleep all day
as two deserters make their way

Out on the Road
01:42
|

Retired cop cruiser
a sedan with a V8 engine
Chevy Caprice rusted at the wheel wells
used to be in the LAPD
but now it's here on my street
in Encino
I leave every morning for El Segundo
49 minutes on the 405
the Angels are in Anaheim
hitting line drives
playing a home game
but the rest of us are out on the road
Retired cop cruiser leaves nights around 9
retired cop now campus security down in Irvine
an hour twenty when the traffic's good
he sits at a desk and checks ID
and walks the halls and the parking lot
it gives him something to do
you gotta go to LA
LA don't come to you it's never
come to me

The Classic Warrior
02:24
|
|||
Roger's on the court, the classic warrior
Mirka's in the stands looking like her life depends on
what he does and doesn't do
looking like she's about to get the worst news
(the classic worrier)
but he pulls through, until he doesn't pull through
'cos one day there's a younger guy who knows the right tricks
a younger guy with stronger lungs taking his first licks
thirsty for more than just a taste, puts on his tennis shoes
looking like she's about to get the worst news
Rogers back from another commercial shoot
another Swiss company that depends on
what he does and doesn't do
but what does he care, he's famous and rich and 42
so he walks in the door
and the girls are just glad to have him home so soon

Incorrigible Germany
01:14
|

You started out last century
killing and starving the lesser people
in your South West Africa
and half way through that century
you killed and starved your way into your
Lebensraum
'til you were forced to let go of that dream
somewhere in the frozen fields
somewhere in the fires and in the smoke
and in the Wirtschaftswunder
even in the Mauerfall
in all the ways you've changed
and all the ways you've stayed the same
another lesser people will be found to bear
the burden of your shame
